Clean, Washed River Sand

River Sand for Bedding, Leveling, and Mixing

Sand is the material that fills the gaps nothing else can. It beds a water line so rocks don’t cut into the pipe, levels the base under a paver patio, cushions the floor of an above-ground pool, and goes into the mixer for concrete and mortar. Because the grains are small and loose, sand settles into every void and drains freely once it’s in place.

River sand is natural sand that’s been washed and sorted by moving water, so it’s clean and fairly uniform. That makes it easy to screed flat and predictable to work with. It isn’t a substitute for compactable fill dirt under a building pad, though. Sand doesn’t hold its shape the way a clay-based fill does, so match the material to the job.

Common Uses

Where Sand Gets Used

Most sand orders are for one of these jobs. If yours isn’t here, call and describe it.

Pipe and Utility Bedding

A sand bed under and around water, sewer, and electrical lines protects the pipe from sharp rock.

Paver and Flagstone Base

A thin, screeded layer over a compacted base gives pavers a flat, even surface to sit on.

Above-Ground Pool Pads

A smooth sand base under the liner protects it and gives the pool a level floor.

Concrete and Mortar Mixing

Sand is the fine aggregate in concrete. Mixed with stone and cement, it fills the voids.

Lawn Leveling

Sand worked into low spots and thin areas evens out a bumpy lawn and improves drainage.

Job Site Backfill

Clean sand backfills around structures and lines where the spec calls for a free-draining material.

Do It Right the First Time

How Sand Works Under a Paver Patio

A paver patio or walkway is only as flat as what’s under it. The usual build has three layers, and sand is the one that makes it level.

Compacted base. Start with 4 to 6 inches of crusher run, placed in lifts and compacted. This layer carries the weight.

Sand bedding. Spread about 1 inch of sand over the base and screed it flat with a straight board. Don’t compact it before the pavers go down.

Pavers and joints. Set the pavers, run a plate compactor over them to seat them in the sand, then sweep sand into the joints to lock everything together.

Skip the compacted base and the sand alone will wash out and settle, leaving dips and loose pavers within a season or two.

Know How Much Sand You Need? Get a Price Today

Send the yardage and the job site, or call and we’ll figure out how much sand the job takes.

Figure Your Order

How Much Sand Do You Need?

Multiply the length, width, and depth of the area in feet, then divide by 27 to get cubic yards. A cubic yard of sand weighs roughly 1.3 to 1.5 tons, depending on how wet it is.

Bedding layers are thin, so most paver and pool jobs take only a few yards. Trench bedding and backfill add up quickly, which is where a full truckload makes sense.

24 ft Round Pool, 2 in Base

About 3 cubic yards of sand.

20 x 30 ft Paver Patio, 1 in Bed

About 2 cubic yards of sand.

200 ft Trench, 2 ft Wide, 1 ft of Bedding

About 15 cubic yards of sand.

Built for Big Orders

Bulk Dirt and Gravel for Contractors

Big jobs run on schedule when the material shows up on time. Our team runs trucks every day, and for large jobs our hauling network brings up to 20 to 25 trucks to the site. On nearby deliveries that means 30 to 40 loads a day, depending on haul distance and offload time.

Every dirt load carries 16 to 17 cubic yards, and every rock load carries up to 21.5 tons. Fewer trips for the same yardage keeps your site moving and your costs down.

Tell us the material, the number of loads, and the job site, and you’ll get a straight answer on price and schedule. The same crew handles your first load and your last.

Common Questions

Questions About Sand Delivery

River sand is natural sand that’s been washed and sorted by moving water. It’s clean, fairly uniform, and drains well, which makes it easy to level and work with.

Yes, as the thin bedding layer over a compacted base. Spread about 1 inch, screed it flat, set the pavers, and compact. Don’t use sand alone as the base.

Not under a slab or building pad. Sand doesn’t hold its shape like a clay-based fill. For pads and foundations, use compactable fill dirt instead.

A base of about 2 inches is common, but follow the pool maker’s instructions. A 24 foot round pool at 2 inches takes about 3 cubic yards.

Because of the weight of a loaded truck, we can’t drive over asphalt driveways or walkways, septic systems, or buried water and electric lines. The driver has the final say on a safe dump spot.
