The Base That Holds

Crusher Run Packs Down Hard and Stays Put

Crusher run is the base layer that keeps a gravel driveway from rutting, potholing, and washing out every time it rains. It’s crushed stone mixed with the fine dust left over from crushing, and that mix is what makes it work. The larger pieces carry the load, and the fines fill the gaps between them so the whole layer packs down into a hard, stable surface.

You’ll also hear it called crush and run. Whatever you call it, it’s the go-to base under driveways, parking pads, shop and shed pads, and the slab for a patio or carport. Lay it on a firm subgrade, wet it, and roll or tamp it, and you get a surface that holds up to trucks and equipment.

Each rock load is a full truck, up to 21.5 tons, which is 43,000 pounds of stone. Smaller trucks often haul closer to 10 to 12 tons, so on a long driveway you’d pay for nearly twice the trips. If you’re looking for crusher run near me anywhere in Marshall, Maury, Williamson, Rutherford, or Bedford County, you’re inside our regular delivery area.

Common Uses

Where Crusher Run Does the Work

Anywhere you need a surface that packs firm and carries weight, crusher run is the usual answer.

Gravel Driveways

A 4 to 6 inch compacted base keeps a new driveway from rutting and gives the top stone a firm bed.

Parking Areas

Firm parking for trucks, trailers, and equipment that won't turn to mud after a week of rain.

Shed and Shop Pads

A level, compacted pad that drains better than bare dirt and keeps a building off the mud.

Under Slabs and Patios

A compacted stone base under a concrete slab, patio, or paver job helps it stay level.

Farm and Job Site Roads

Haul roads, barn lanes, and temporary construction entrances that keep heavy traffic moving.

Driveway Repair

Fill potholes and rebuild washed-out stretches of an existing gravel drive.

Do It Once

How to Build a Crusher Run Driveway That Lasts

A crusher run driveway lasts when it’s built in layers.

Start with a firm subgrade. Strip the topsoil and grass, then cut or fill to grade. Soft spots and organic material under the stone will show up later as ruts and sinkholes.

Lay the crusher run 4 to 6 inches deep. Use 4 inches for a car driveway on good ground and 6 inches or more for trucks, equipment, or soft clay. Place it in lifts and compact each one, with a little water if it’s dry, so the fines lock the stone together.

Crown it to shed water. A slight crown in the middle sends rain off to the sides instead of down the length of the drive, which is what washes most gravel driveways out.

Top it if you want. Many driveways get a layer of #57 gravel over the crusher run for a cleaner look and better drainage on the surface. See gravel delivery for the top stone.

Building a Driveway? Get Your Base Stone Priced

Send the length, width, and job site, or call and we’ll figure the tonnage with you.

Figure Your Order

How Much Crusher Run Do You Need?

Crusher run is sold by the ton. Multiply the length, width, and depth of the area in feet, divide by 27 to get cubic yards, then multiply by about 1.4 to get tons. That figure is for the stone after it’s compacted, so it already allows for packing down.

One full load of up to 21.5 tons covers roughly 1,100 to 1,200 square feet at 4 inches deep. That’s about 100 feet of a 12 foot wide driveway.

12 x 100 ft Driveway, 4 in Deep

About 15 cubic yards, or 21 tons. One full load.

24 x 24 ft Shed Pad, 6 in Deep

About 11 cubic yards, or 15 tons. One load with stone to spare.

12 x 400 ft Driveway, 6 in Deep

About 89 cubic yards, or 124 tons. Plan on six loads.

Built for Big Orders

Bulk Dirt and Gravel for Contractors

Big jobs run on schedule when the material shows up on time. Our team runs trucks every day, and for large jobs our hauling network brings up to 20 to 25 trucks to the site. On nearby deliveries that means 30 to 40 loads a day, depending on haul distance and offload time.

Every dirt load carries 16 to 17 cubic yards, and every rock load carries up to 21.5 tons. Fewer trips for the same yardage keeps your site moving and your costs down.

Tell us the material, the number of loads, and the job site, and you’ll get a straight answer on price and schedule. The same crew handles your first load and your last.

Common Questions

Questions About Crusher Run Delivery

Crusher run is crushed stone mixed with the stone dust and fines that come off the crusher. The mix of sizes is what lets it pack into a solid layer instead of rolling around underfoot like washed gravel.

Crusher run keeps its fines, so it compacts hard and makes a firm base. Washed gravel like #57 stone has the fines removed, so water drains straight through it. Many driveways use crusher run underneath and gravel on top.

Four inches compacted is a common minimum for a car driveway on firm ground. Use 6 inches or more for trucks, equipment, or soft clay, and place it in lifts so each layer gets compacted.

A full load of up to 21.5 tons covers roughly 1,100 to 1,200 square feet at 4 inches deep, or about 100 feet of a 12 foot wide driveway.

Yes. With gate spreading, the driver opens the tailgate a set amount and pulls forward to lay the stone in an even strip down your driveway. You’ll still want to compact it after.
